Job Description:


US Signal is a leading data center services provider, offering secure, reliable network, cloud hosting, colocation, data protection, and disaster recovery services — all powered by its expansive, robust fiber network. US Signal also helps customers optimize their IT resources through the provision of managed services and professional services.

We are currently seeking a DevOps Engineer to join our Software Development Team in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  This is not a remote position. 

The individual will be a key part of our Software Development team, and will be responsible for maintaining and updating production infrastructure serving critical business applications. If you enjoy automation and configuration management tools in an open source environment, we want to talk with you. The DevOps Engineer will work closely with the Software Development Team and participate in software development projects. A portion of the DevOps Engineer’s time will be dedicated to development in conjunction with the rest of the Software Development Team.


Under minimal supervision:

  • Create, maintain and deploy tools to automate management of systems and services in a virtualized environment.
  • Manage patching and updates while maintaining a high availability environment.
  • Work in conjunction with Network Administrators to escalate and resolve business impacting systems issues.
  • Work with Software Development Team to deploy and create solutions - some development and programming will be expected.
  • Other projects as assigned by US Signal Management.

  • Strong working knowledge of Linux / Unix system administration
  • Working knowledge of configuration automation / orchestration tools such as Ansible
  • Working knowledge of high availability environments and load balancing
  • Working knowledge of server side scripting languages
  • Functional knowledge of web development
  • Functional knowledge of SQL and database administration
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast paced environment



A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology is preferable but not required.


  • Experience working in an IT/IS environment is required.
  • Experience administering Linux is required.
  • Experience with a server-side scripting language is required (Python, Ruby, PHP, Perl).
  • Some experience with SQL and database administration is required (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2).
  • A strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in configuration automation tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • A strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Hardware experience is not required for this position, as the Dev Ops Engineer will work within virtualized environments.
