Job Description:

We are seeking a Cloud Engineering Manager to join our growing team in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Cloud Engineering Manager serves as motivator, mentor, and leader responsible for ensuring the overall availability and reliability of US Signal Cloud products as well as the deployment, operation, and Tier III support resource to support the company within its owned and operated data centers. Within this role, the manager works collaboratively with the Executive Director of Cloud & Network Engineering to manage existing product and equipment lifecycles as well as ensure on-time delivery of projects.


  • Leadership and Vision:
    • Accountable for management of project prioritization, progress, and workload management across Cloud Engineering staff to ensure on-time delivery
    • Accountable for employee performance management including setting performance expectations and counseling employees when expectations are not met
    • Identify process inefficiencies and implement improvements as required to scale performance
    • Provide a path forward to team members for alignment of employee efforts with company goals and business plans
  • Cloud Operations Management:
    • 24x7x365 accountability for the high availability of US Signal Cloud products, including day-to-day operations and Tier III technical support as needed
    • Responsible for working with the Principal Systems Engineer for development, documentation, and distribution of policies and procedures related to the engineering, operation and maintenance of cloud systems as required
    • Work with Principal Systems Engineer on capacity planning efforts, management of data center resources, project prioritization and completion of assigned capacity related tasks
    • Create and maintain time off and on-call rotation scheduling to ensure adequate support coverage
    • Other projects and duties as assigned by Executive Director
  • Engineering and Operations:
    • Ensure proper support, operation, and maintenance of datacenter infrastructure systems servicing US Signal Cloud products; including greenfield deployments of new Cloud Computing pods
    • Review and manage ticketing queue to ensure timely assignment and progression of support tickets
    • Oversee maintenance success/failure and communication during/post data center maintenance windows as required
    • Responsible for approval and release management for all infrastructure and system change maintenances
    • Coordinate inter-departmental training as relates to US Signal Cloud services
  • Ensure proper management and operation of an enterprise class datacenter/infrastructure environment
    • Multi-vendor storage systems, object storage
    • Server Systems: Dell, Cisco
    • Network: Cisco, Dell, Arista
    • Virtualization: VMware ESXi, VMware’s vSphere, vCloud Director
    • Data Replication and Backup platforms
    • Microsoft Server Technologies: Active Director, Server 2012/2016/2019
    • Linux OS and variants
    • Firewall platforms
    • Network monitoring platforms
  • Vendor Management:
    • Engage vendors and research new technologies as requested by Management
    • Serve as vendor technical support escalation point for hardware or software problems as required

Experience and Skills:


  • In-depth understanding of virtualization with practical experience in at least one hypervisor, preference given to VMware’s vSphere.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams with diverse responsibilities, with at least 3-5 years management experience
  • Experience in a highly-available datacenter environment:
    • Deploying and operating Linux or other UNIX variants.
    • Server hardware management across multiple vendors.
    • SAN and object storage management across multiple vendors.
    • Security best practices in server configuration, tool development, and access controls.
    • Microsoft Active Directory, Windows Server and WSUS; PowerShell a plus.
    • Operating common enterprise switching and routing platforms.
    • Deploying or managing servers in large-scale and geographically diverse environments.
    • Capacity planning, utilization review & performance monitoring.
    • iSCSI and/or Fiber Channel storage area networks
    • Firewall and network security concepts
  • Proficiency in network architecture or core technologies, and protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP(S), IPsec, VLANs, routing, etc.).
  • Excellent customer service focus, customer communication skills, and experience exceeding customer expectations.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal communication, and documentation skills.
  • Possess superb troubleshooting and problem analysis skills.
  • Act as a point of escalation & mentor for Cloud Engineering staff.
  • Recognize and adopt best practices in documentation, testing, security, operational support at scale, and efficient use of resources.


Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Networking or Computer Science preferred.


Experience with Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. Extensive experience with the Microsoft Office platform, and Visio.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

This position operates in a variety of environments. The majority of the time is spent in a professional office environment and this role routinely uses standard office equipment.

Required License(s)/Certification(s):

Technical and Management certifications a plus. Valid, active driver’s license with a good driving record as defined by the Company’s current insurance provider.
